Study Skills - August 2011
Hello everybody!
The Brainy Tutor hopes you are ready for school Monday August 22, 2011 and you are all signed up with a tutor. The key to doing well in school this year is first of all sign up for tutoring, and plan to be in class every day. But in order to be in class every day, you need good rest. Plan to sleep 8 to 10 hours per night. There are turns of studies out there that show this is right for children. You also need a good breakfast, and no, I don't mean donuts or anything like that, get a glass of milk, a cup of orange juice, a piece of fruit, a toast or a good brand of whole grain cereal and now you are off to a good start.
For every hour you are in class, plan to spend 3 hours studying per week, if you are in elementary, middle school or high school, for college however, its 3 hours of private study per hour of lecture. Before each class period, look your syllabus over, look over your textbook if you possess one, focus on graphs, charts and pretty much everything in BOLD.
During class, take notes, listen attentively. Most teachers will emphasize the things that are important more than once, so listen. If you don't understand what the teacher went over, then the wise course of wisdom is to immediately make an appointment with the teacher, or make arrangements to meet your tutor that day. Right after class; take about 20 minutes to go over what was covered. Do this every day for each class, so that when it’s time to study for the exam, the information will already be familiar. REMEMBER, the day to study for the exam is the day the teacher goes over the information. If you have any questions, ask your teacher or tutor. If you don't already have a tutor, then The Brainy Tutor will be happy to assist you in this area.
Get phone numbers from class mates, teachers, tutors, so that if you miss class, or you are stuck on homework you can call and ask. Make it a regular habit to see the teacher or tutor at least once a week. You may want to see your tutor 3 times or more depending on your individual needs. This will be helpful for boarder line grades at the end of the semester.
We wish you all success this year!
